Keeping Children Safe in Education for September 2024 (DfE)
The DfE has now published the latest (for information) version of Keeping Children Safe in Education ready for September 2024. You may remember that the previous government said that the KCSIE 2024 would contain a limited number of changes, prior to wider changes next year following a call for evidence (see here). We will have to wait and see what happens for September 2025 following the election of a new government in July.
Possibly not the final version...
Although KCSIE for September 2024 has been published now, it does not come into force until September 2024. Remember that the 'for information' version may be subject to further changes. Sometimes the wording gets revised and paragraph numbers may be altered, so I would be cautious about making changes to school policies until the final version comes out. In particular, there are two specific areas we know are subject to change: preventing radicalisation, where new definitions are coming into force; and the guidance about gender-questioning children. The statutory consultation on RSHE may also have an impact.

Operation Encompass
Operation Encompass is a police and education early information safeguarding partnership enabling schools to offer immediate support to children experiencing domestic abuse. The scheme ensures that there is a simple telephone call or notification to a school’s trained Designated Safeguarding Lead prior to the start of the next school day after an incident of police attended domestic abuse where there are children related to either of the adult parties involved.
Whilst many schools and police forces already use Operation Encompass alerts effectively, the scheme's organisers wanted to have a greater impact. They have successfully lobbed parliament and on 24th May 2024 Royal Assent was granted to The Victims and Prisoners Act. The new Act places Operation Encompass into Law and puts a statutory obligation on police forces to share Operation Encompass notifications with schools. As parliament has now been dissolved, it is not yet clear when the provision of the The Victims and Prisoners Act will come into force.
You can download resources about Operation Encompass, including posters in several community languages here: https://www.operationencompass.org/educational-settings/resources-for-educational-settings
CPOMS Connect Conference - CPOMS
Bureaucracy is part of any organisation and paperwork a necessary evil. Without it any attempt at administration would be chaos. This does not mean that the functioning of a bureaucracy needs to be labyrinthine, or in anyway time consuming. One of the benefits of technology and particularly the interconnectivity, that the online world provides is the ability to streamline organisation. CPOMS was started in 2011, with the objective of making educational bureaucracy simpler and faster. On Friday the 28th June between 9:30 and 15:30, CPOMS will be hosting a conference aimed at helping them build their product better. The conference is free and will be held at the Craven College in Skipton. To find out more about what to expect, and how to register, please follow the link below:

Staff Question of the Week
QUESTION: What is the legal age for marriage and civil partnerships in England and Wales, without parental permission; and with parental permission.
ANSWER: 18 years old
NOTE: Parental permission is now irrelevant. Until Monday 27th February 2023, it was possible for 16 and 17 year olds to marry with parental permission. This was changed by the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Minimum Age) Act 2022.
